Broker Talking Points: Six Reasons Why Small Businesses Still Need Insurance

One of the inevitable consequences of the UK’s ongoing efforts to slow and control the spread of COVID-19 has been the impact on small businesses across the nation. Necessary though they were, social distancing and "lockdown" measures left many struggling to cope with significantly reduced income and rushing to cut costs.
Even now, as the government re-opens large sections of the economy, big challenges remain and, for many small businesses, cost control remains a top priority. Naturally, that leads to questions about insurance - questions like “Is insurance a financial burden that I could do without?” and even “My business is still closed, why do I need insurance?”.
There is a clear knock-on effect for brokers. Clients may be unwilling to renew, more likely to shop around for lower premiums, and new business may be harder to secure. Clearly, however, as many businesses take their first steps to recovery, maintaining business insurance cover is as important as it ever was – so overcoming objections, clearly explaining the need to retain insurance cover, and addressing cost concerns will be vital to brokers’ own recovery.
With that in mind, we have developed six talking points, to help brokers engage with clients and navigate those conversations.
Purple team day at the farm!
October 7th 2019
Last Thursday we were lucky enough as a team to spend the day as community volunteers at Elm Tree Farm in Stapleton, Bristol. They are a small farm tucked away in the centre of Bristol where they work with and support adults with learning disabilities and autism. They grow a wide range of produce including fruit, veggies, herbs and flowers and create a number of woodwork projects for the home and garden. Everything can be brought from their farm shop or at the local Farmer’s Market.
The day got off to a flying start with jobs being divided up in the team, Les and Andrew were tasked with building a boot rack – a major construction project! Aaron and Stuart were in the gardens building raised beds for the next batch of flowers and Kate, Vicki, Kerry and Jo were deep cleaning the kitchen and canteen… it was hard labour, but we all got on with our jobs with a spring in our step and some help from the visitors to the farm that day!
By the end of the day we were all grubby and tired but the smiles on the faces of all those we did it all for left us in no doubt that the effort had all been so worthwhile. We also had plenty of giggles along the way!

Another year; another award!
On Friday at a glittering Awards ceremony in London, Purple was named ‘Network of the Year’ for the second year running at the prestigious Insurance Age UK Broker Awards, beating off competition from an array of the UK’s principal broker networks.
This is our fourth award in five years and its great recognition for the whole team. If anyone has a spare trophy cabinet please contact Purple HQ!
So we just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our members who, together with our partner insurers and other service providers, have helped us along the way. We simply could not have achieved this industry recognition without you all and for that we’re very grateful.

NEW PURPLE RECRUIT

Following the retirement last month of David Chapman, our Development Manager for the Central & Eastern Region, I’m pleased to announce the appointment of a direct replacement in that role.
Kerry joins Purple having spent most of the last 35 years in various business development roles. Originally with CU/CGU for almost 20 years, more recently she was a Strategic Account Manager with COBRA Network, working primarily with the broking community in the central and south eastern regions. We’re delighted to welcome someone with Kerry’s deep experience and extensive market contacts to our team. Obviously she will be settling into her new role over the coming weeks during which time she will be introducing herself to our members and partners.
